Speakers' Series  /  Ateliers Web

HIP offers a series of one-hour webinars for industry professionals, covering a range of IEQ issues. Participants view PowerPoint presentations and other visuals using their web browsers while listening on their telephone to the leader’s presentation. Since the presentations are live, participants can ask questions, make comments and exchange advice, all without leaving their office.

If you haven't tried one yet - you're missing out on the most convenient and cost-effective way of staying up- to-date on IEQ issues. And, since there's no limit to how many participants can use the same connection, it's a great staff / contractor training opportunity.

These webinars are organized by HIP’s  Education and Outreach Committee on the second Tuesday of each month. They are priced at $40 per connection, which includes a web connection and a toll-free teleconference connection.  An annual individual memberships in HIP include four webinars (within that calendar year - a $60 discount even before taking into consideration other membership benefits. )

"Excellent, very cost-effective...The purpose of a seminar is to share information with a group of people in the same room. Webinars do exactly the same thing but provide you with a lot of time and money savings. When I say a lot, it is substantial. Imagine if you had to attend a conference. You're looking to pay about $1,000 to attend the conference, plus tickets and hotel." - Jimi Arey, Arey Environmental Inc.

"Everything changes and there's new ways and better ways of doing things. The webinars allow the new ways of dealing with issues to come forward." - Peter Gauthier, Healthy Environments Manager for Toronto Public Health's West Region

Here's more comments from confidential post- webinar evaluations:

  • "A Wonderful way of communicating & educating"

  • "Well presented"

  • "Interesting use of technology. .. Better than just a webcast or conference call format."

  • "Easy access to information"

  • "Great format!"

  • "I liked the interactions between participants"

  • "Highly recommended"

Schedule

Our upcoming ones are as follows:

  • October 9, 2007: IEQ and Sustainable Buildings

The new LEED and Go Green standards for sustainable design, construction and operation  are generating  interest and awareness in the public and private sectors.  These standards are more demanding than existing building code requirements with respect to environmental and energy performance requirements.  Improved indoor air quality and comfort, in addition to mould and moisture control and increased building durability, are consistently cited as key advantages of living and working in sustainable buildings.  The presentation will present an overview of the LEED and Go Green indoor environmental quality requirements with discussion of some case studies. 12 noon to 1 PM Eastern Time.

Presenter: Michael Glassco, National Operations Manager, Theodor Sterling Associates

  • November 20, 2007: Designing and Constructing Healthy New Schools

The importance of creating and maintaining healthy schools is becoming more evident as research and experience are indicating that health and performance can be affected by the built environment. In Nova Scotia, guidelines for Healthy School Design and Construction were developed and put into use over the past decade. This webinar will outline the guideline being used, what is being learned through the construction of what we call "Healthy New Schools", and will give an overview of our complementary work to ensure these schools remain healthy over their lifetimes. It will also touch on the similar efforts to benefit the operations of existing schools and on the partnership between "Green" school and "Healthy" school design and construction over the last decade. 12 noon to 1 PM Eastern Time.

Presenter: Karen Robinson of Enviro-Health Consulting Limited and President and CEO of CASLE (Canadians for A Safe Learning Environment)

  • December 4, 2007: New Radon Guidelines, Testing and Remediation

Health Canada has recently made significant changes to its exposure guidelines for radon. These changes should be of interest to home inspectors and other industry stakeholders because homes that were previously considered to be safe might now be considered to have a radon problem requiring remediation. Presently, 8% to 15% of lung cancer in Canada is attributable to radon and it is estimated that about 400 lives a year can be saved if all homes are remediated to meet the new guidelines.

In this webinar, Health Canada will cover the changes to its guidelines and how to test for radon. CMHC will then address remediation options. This is a special 90-minute webinar, with Health Canada sponsoring free registration for the first 50 Canadian home inspectors who sign up. Each registrant will have access to one web connection and one toll-free teleconference connection, and there's no limit on how many participants can use the same connection.

Presenters: Jeff Whyte, Health Canada; and Don Fugler, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
