Overview

The Research and Development (R&D) Committee of the Healthy Indoors Partnership (HIP) currently has two mandates:

a) To establish a data warehouse for Canadian Indoor Environmental Quality, in homes and in offices by leveraging resources readily available in public and private sector organizations.

b) To promote Healthy Indoor research activities in Canadian Universities by managing a yearly HIP student scholarship fund.

The Canadian Indoor Environmental Quality Data Warehouse

Numerous indoor air quality investigations have been conducted since the early 80s. Each collected air quality data in Canadian indoor non-industrial settings. Results of many of these projects are available but scattered all over, in labs, research institutions and private sector organizations. The aim of the HIP RC is to pull together the data from the numerous IAQ sampling campaigns, so far conducted, and develop a national IAQ data warehouse. The national IAQ data warehouse will facilitate future research on Canada ’s indoor environmental quality indicators.  Members of HIP RC will be responsible to develop an appropriate methodology with relevant data suppression techniques to respect confidentiality of data sources and their respective locations. Members of the HIP RC will also be responsible to manage the compilation of data, populate the cells of the data, locate the sources of the data and solicit public and private organizations that have access to such data. A national domain-expert roundtable may need to be organized to this end.

Understanding the Science and Technology of Mould in the Indoor Environment

A workshop was convened by the Committee in Montreal, on November 23-24 2003, to discuss the state of knowledge and research needs on two aspects of mould in the indoor environment: Health Effects of Mould and Prevention and Control of Mould. By invitation, participants broadly represented stakeholder interests and expert knowledge on this issue.

Presentations and group discussions allowed stakeholders to explain the economic, health, environmental and risk issues of mould from their perspective. Experts presented their state of knowledge on the topic. A more balanced understanding of the issue resulted, which allowed priority needs to be identified for research, information, guidelines and best practices, and their dissemination.
